East Greenland: Tasiilaq and Kulusuk

Come experience the true culture of the Greenlandic people in the land of the polar bears on this 4 day tour from Reykjavik! Because of the geographical location of East Greenland, the villages of Kulusuk and Tasiilaq, also known as Ammassalik, have been relatively isolated in relation to the rest of Greenland and the world in general. Here a unique dialect is spoken and the original native "drum dance" is still performed. In fact the area was only "discovered" by Europeans a little over 100 years ago. The savage mountains, spectacular icebergs and picturesque villages will amaze even the most experienced travelers. This trip is a must for those looking for something new!

Itinerary

Day 1: Reykjavik - Kulusuk - Tasiilaq

Greenland PhotoEnjoy a morning flight from Reykjavik to Kulusuk where you will transfer via helicopter to the town of Tasiilaq. Enjoy the short, but memorable flight over the mountains and glaciers to the jewel of East Greenland. Upon arrival meet your guide and enjoy the short city tour as you transfer to your hotel, Hotel Angmagssalik. Get settled before your guided walking tour of the city, which takes you through the old colonial area and the harbor with a visit to the city museum located in the old church, all while learning about the history and culture of the Greenlandic people. Dinner is served at your hotel in the evening.

Day 2: Tasiilaq

Greenland PhotoAfter a breakfast buffet at your hotel enjoy an impressive sailing trip into the pack ice. This ice is tough sea-ice deriving from countless winters in the Polar Ocean and often 10 metres thick or more. The ice from the Polar Ocean flows mainly outwards between Spitzbergen and East Greenland. Amongst the pack-ice are enormous icebergs, pieces of inland ice often criss-crossed by blue and green stripes where melt water from the glaciers has run into crevasses in the many-thousand-year-old ice. This is truely a "must" for photographers! Return to your hotel for lunch and spend the rest of the day exploring the area on your own or ask us for more suggestions on guided tours in the area. Again dinner will be served at the hotel in the evening.

Day 3: Tasiilaq - Kulusuk

Greenland PhotoIn the morning have breakfast at your hotel before your walk through Blomsterdalen, the Flower Valley. The unique Arctic flora in the Flower Valley makes this a great place for a short stroll or the kickoff to a longer trek into the unknown mountains of East Greenland. Just after you leave the town you will pass the beautiful cemetery adorned with flowers and momentos left by loved ones. Following the hike will be a transfer to the heliport for your flight to Kulusuk. Have your cameras ready as you fly over and through the many awesome land formations carved by the glaciers, wind and sea. Upon arrival you'll find Greenland's magnificent and unique local traditions right on the doorstep of your hotel, Hotel Kulusuk. The hotel is scenically located on the shore of Greenland's Eastern extremity - Kulusuk (Kap Dan) and is only a few minutes drive, or walk, from Kulusuk Airport. Check in and enjoy a 4hr hiking tour to the ruins of the mysterious Hunting Wall. This easy hike crosses the river and the marshland surrounding the shore line to the Big Stone, which local hunters have used to spot their prey for centuries. Close by are the remains of an ancient wall which was used to trap the wildlife and is believed to date back hunderds of years. After a light refreshment go in search of an old hunter's grave and the paryer stone used to contact the ancient Inuit Gods. Your guide will tell about the Inuit beliefs and the religious traditions to help bring the culture alive. After the hike enjoy a drive to a mountain view point for a spectaular panoramic veiw of the Artic Ocean and Kulusuk Island. Dinner will be served at your hotel that evening.

Day 4: Kulusuk - Reykjavik

Greenland PhotoEnjoy your last breakfast in Greenland. Spend the morning hiking around the area or possibly visit the Inuit village of Kap Dan to experience daily life in a Greenlandic settlement before your flight back to Reykjavik City Airport. We can also help with tours to the glaciers or longer boat trips if you are interested. Call Runic Travels for more information.
