Included

Pick up of travel documents at the airport. Arrival and departure transfer with scheduled Flybus.
Rental car with unlimited mileage, CDW, VAT and one authorized driver. Pick up of rental car on day 2. Drop off at Keflavík airport or in Reykjavík on departure day before 09:00. If the car is delivered outside this time range, an extra day will be charged.
Accommodation is a combination of farmhouses, guesthouses and hotels. Breakfast is included

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Keflavík airport

Arrival at Keflavík airport and pick up of travel documents. Transfer with Flybus (airport shuttle) to your hotel in Iceland's capital, Reykjavík.

Day 2: Þingvellir National Park

Your adventure starts off with Þingvellir National Park, a place of great geological and historical interest, the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot-spring area. Drive onwards along the south shore, viewing Skógafoss waterfall, the black beaches around Vík and Mýdalsjökull glacier.
Optional Excursion: Snowmobile tour on Mýdalsjökull glacier.

Day 3: Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Drive through the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, explore Skaftafell National Park, a land where lush vegetation meets the edge of a glacier. Panaramic views of the great Vatnajökull glacier and the surrounding black desert sands abound. Continue to the Glacial Lagoon Jökulsárlón and then onwards to the harbor town Höfn.
Optional Excursions: Boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, glacier hike in Skaftafell area.

Day 4: The Rugged Coastline of the East Fjords

Drive along the rugged coastline of the East Fjords with their towering mountains and beautiful fishing villages. On the way there is an option of taking a boat tour to Papey island where thousands of puffins nest each summer or visit the unique and famous stone collection of local resident Petra Sveinsdottir at Stöðvarfjörður.

Day 5: The Möðrudalsöræfi Highlands

Travel across the Möðrudalsöræfi highlands towards Dettifoss, Europe's mightiest waterfall. Visit the magnificent horseshoe-shaped canyon Ásbyrgi. Onwards to Tjörnes peninsula and Húsavík fishing port.
Optional Excursion: Whale watching from Húsavík.

Day 6: Lake Mývatn

Today explore the highlights of the Lake Mývatn area, such as the volcanic formations at Dimmuborgir, the pseudocraters at Skútustaðir, the colorful sulfurous slopes of Námaskarð and the Krafla volcano. Drive on to Goðafoss waterfall and the town of Akureyri or Skagafjörður.

Day 7: Skagafjörður

Drive through the historical region of Skagafjörður renowned for its horsebreeding. There is the option of visiting the old farmstead of Glaumbær, a great example of old Icelandic architecture. Continue to the bay of Húnaflói and across Holtavörðuheiði plateau, returning to Reykjavík in the late afternoon. Spend the evening exploring the city or dining on some of the best seafood or organic lamb you will ever eat.
Optional Excursion: Evening at the Blue Lagoon Another option is to travel across the barren Kjölur highlands (4WD needed, track open from mid-June), to the geothermal oasis at Hveravellir and onwards to Reykjavík.

Day 8: Departure

Departure by Flybus to the airport. The transfer is included but be sure to schedule your pick-up time with the front desk. Depart Iceland for home or continue your adventure onto your next country with the help of Runic Travels.
